Where to install crash and/or pedestrian barriers

Here we give you some guidance in how you should choose between installing crash and/or pedestrian barriers as a protection in your workplace facilities.

Crash barriers only

  • Face ends of pallet racks
  • Entry points for trucks between racks
  • Sensitive infrastructure near truck passages
  • Ramps (fall protection additionally needed)
  • Along walls opposite pallet racks and walls next to truck passages (if space permits)
  • Office booths on shop floors, especially if glazed

Self-closing gates

  • Crossings for pedestrians
  • Planned entry/exit point to a hall area with truck traffic

Crash and pedestrian barriers

  • Separation of truck passages and pedestrian walkways
  • End of a truck slope leading onto a truck passage
  • Separation of workplaces from truck passages

Pedestrian barriers only

  • Infront of a door leading onto a truck passage
  • Next to a gate for truck passage so people will not accidentally walk into track (door for pedestrians should be placed next to the gate)
  • Prevent persons from taking hazardous walking routes (change behaviour)
